The C-4 Ranch occupies 1000 acres of beautiful Texas Hill Country acreage. Though it is located only 15 minutes or so from Fredericksburg's famed shops, it truly feels like a step back into history. The ranch was established in the mid-1800's by George William Crenwelge, one of the original settlers who made the perilous trip from Germany to colonize Fredericksburg, Texas and the surrounding Texas Hills. "My Other Place" is what Crenwelge called the two story rock house that was originally built on the property around 1870. For many years the downstairs area was used as lodging for hunters, and the upstairs was used to store hay. The house is still in the family and owned by Brenda Nicholas (granddaughter of Werner Crenwelge.)
Enjoy the peace and quiet and serenity of the setting and absorb the history that emanates from the beautiful hand-cut 24 inch thick limestone walls. You can also hike or ride a bike (there are two on the premises or you can bring your own) throughout the 280 acre high fenced game preserve which contains a large population of native white tailed deer and turkey, in addition to exotics like black buck antelope and axis deer. If you venture to the large pond to fish (catch and release) or just observe, you will see large cranes and several varieties of ducks that also come to water. And of course you will probably be visited by one of the "friendly cats" that live on the property and have been known to greet the guests.
If pure relaxation is what you crave, then enjoy the view from the balcony or the upstairs windows as the deer come to the 30 acre field behind the house every evening at dusk. You can also enjoy a swim in your own private pool, then lounge under the massive oaks that shade the house and the pool area.
Guests of My Other Place are only a short distance from one of the finest, most highly acclaimed restaurants in the state of Texas, Hill Top Cafe. For 32 years Hill Top has delighted customers with its unique blend of Cajun, Greek and Texas country styles of cuisine--all in a relaxed eclectic Hill Country atmosphere. Hill Top Cafe is owned and operated by your hostess Brenda Nicholas and her noted musician husband Johnny Nicholas( www.johnnynicholasblues.com) who often sits down and plays for the Hill Top faithful when he is not on the road performing.
